Everything You Need to Know About Sunscreen

A four-and-a-half-year clinical trial found daily SPF reduced skin aging by 24%. Here's the mineral vs chemical truth, the reef-safe myth, and whether the SPF in your foundation actually counts.

The Number That Changes Everything

Before we get into ingredients, regulations, or which formula feels best under your foundation, I want to give you one piece of information that reframes everything else.

A clinical trial followed women for four and a half years. One group wore broad-spectrum SPF daily. The other group did not apply it consistently. After four and a half years, the daily SPF group had 24% less skin aging --- less wrinkling, less discoloration, less loss of firmness --- than those who skipped it.

Twenty-four percent. Documented. Measurable. Visible.

No serum, no treatment, no supplement produces results anywhere close to that number. And yet most women over 40 spend more on a single eye cream than on their annual supply of sunscreen. That is a prioritization problem --- and it is one worth fixing.

This guide is everything you need to fix it.

The Two Types of Sunscreen --- And Why It Matters

Every sunscreen on the market falls into one of two categories: chemical or mineral. Understanding the difference is the foundation of shopping smarter.

Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat, which is then released from the skin. They typically feel lighter and more invisible than mineral formulas, making them cosmetically appealing --- especially for women who want something that disappears under makeup without leaving a white cast.

The concern: in 2019, the FDA proposed that several common chemical sunscreen ingredients --- including oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene --- be reclassified as needing additional safety data. Studies found that these ingredients were absorbed into the bloodstream after a single application, in some cases at levels significantly exceeding the FDA's own safety thresholds. Oxybenzone, for example, was found in blood at concentrations up to 180 times the level the FDA considers a threshold for potential safety concerns.

Absorbed does not automatically mean harmful --- and it is important to be clear that no definitive proof of harm in humans has been established from sunscreen use. But absorbed at levels beyond safety thresholds without long-term safety data is not a position most of us want to be in if a safer alternative exists.

The FDA has declared only two sunscreen ingredients fully safe and effective: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Everything else is still under review.

Mineral Sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients. Rather than absorbing UV radiation, they sit on top of the skin and physically reflect it --- acting more like a shield than a sponge.

Zinc oxide provides the broadest spectrum protection of any single sunscreen ingredient, blocking both UVA and UVB rays effectively. It is also significantly gentler on the skin than most chemical alternatives, making it the first choice for women with sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin --- categories that often expand after 40 as estrogen declines and the skin barrier becomes more vulnerable.

The historic downside of mineral sunscreens was the white cast --- the ghostly residue left by older formulations that made them difficult to wear under makeup or on deeper skin tones. Modern mineral formulas have largely solved this problem through micronized zinc oxide and tinted versions that blend invisibly or add a flattering warmth to the skin.

For women over 40, a mineral SPF with zinc oxide as the primary active ingredient is the gold standard recommendation --- from dermatologists, from the FDA, and from the clinical evidence base.

UVA vs UVB --- Why Both Letters Matter

Sunscreen labels say 'broad spectrum' --- but do you know what that actually means? It means the product protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Here's why both matter, and why they damage your skin in very different ways.

UVB Rays --- The Burning Rays

UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. They are more intense in summer, at higher altitudes, and between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Critically, they are largely blocked by glass --- so sitting by a window does not give you significant UVB exposure.

UVB rays primarily affect the outermost layer of the skin. They are the main driver of sunburn and play a significant role in skin cancer risk.

UVA Rays --- The Aging Rays

UVA rays penetrate significantly deeper into the skin than UVB --- reaching the dermis, where your collagen and elastin live. They break down the proteins that keep skin firm and elastic. They trigger the overproduction of melanin that creates dark spots and uneven pigmentation. They cause the thickening and coarsening of skin texture that accumulates over decades.

And here is the critical point that most people do not know: UVA rays come through glass. They are present year-round, in all weather conditions, at nearly the same intensity regardless of the season. The UV rays that enter through your car window, your office window, your kitchen window every single day --- those are UVA rays, and they are aging your skin continuously.

This is why the left side of a person's face often ages faster than the right if they drive regularly. The driver's side window lets in UVA rays on every journey, year after year.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both. A product that only states an SPF number without 'broad spectrum' on the label protects only against UVB. For anti-aging purposes --- which is likely your primary concern --- UVA protection is the priority.

The 'Reef Safe' Conversation

You have almost certainly seen 'reef safe' on sunscreen labels. You may have assumed it meant something specific. It does not --- at least not legally.

'Reef safe' is not a regulated term in the United States. Any brand can print it on any product with zero requirement to prove the claim. There is no FDA or EPA standard that defines what reef safe means, no testing requirement, and no enforcement mechanism.

What the science actually shows: oxybenzone has been demonstrated to cause coral bleaching at concentrations as low as 62 parts per trillion --- equivalent to approximately one drop in 6.5 million gallons of water. This finding led Hawaii, Palau, the US Virgin Islands, and several other regions to ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate by law.

'Biodegradable' is similarly misleading on sunscreen labels. A product that eventually breaks down in the environment can still cause significant damage to marine ecosystems while it is in the process of breaking down.

The only reliable test for genuine reef safety: flip the bottle and read the active ingredients. If the only sunscreen active is zinc oxide --- you have a genuinely reef-friendly product. If oxybenzone, octinoxate, or other chemical filters are listed, no amount of 'reef safe' marketing on the front of the bottle changes that.

Does SPF in Your Foundation Actually Work?

This is one of the most common questions I receive, and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no --- though it leans very firmly in one direction.

The SPF level stated on any product is measured in laboratory conditions using a standardized application amount of 2 milligrams of product per square centimeter of skin. That is approximately one teaspoon for the face alone --- far more than most women apply of any foundation, and more than most would want to apply.

Multiple studies have confirmed that people apply only 25 to 50 percent of the amount needed to achieve the stated SPF protection in real-world use. This means your SPF 30 foundation may be functioning closer to SPF 8 to 15 on any given day.

There is also the reapplication issue. Sunscreen requires reapplication every two hours when you are outdoors, and after swimming or heavy sweating. Almost no one is reapplying their foundation every two hours.

The verdict: SPF in your foundation or moisturizer is a bonus, not a strategy. Apply a dedicated broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as a separate step in your morning routine --- after moisturizer, before primer or foundation. Your SPF-infused makeup then adds an extra layer of incidental protection, which is genuinely useful, but it should never be your primary UV defense.

How to Choose: The Three Questions

Cut through the marketing and ask three questions before purchasing any sunscreen:

  • Is zinc oxide the primary active ingredient? (Check the 'Active Ingredients' section on the back of the bottle, not the front)

  • Is it labeled broad spectrum --- meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB?

  • Is it SPF 30 or higher?

If the answer to all three is yes, you have a good sunscreen. Everything else --- the texture, the finish, the scent, the price --- is personal preference. The best sunscreen is the one you will actually apply every morning without skipping it.

Apply it every morning. To your face, your neck, and the backs of your hands. Rain or shine, indoors or out. Before your makeup. After your moisturizer.
